Hillhurst Sunnyside Planning Committee
August, 2024- Please note, the Planning Coordinator position is currently vacant. Following the September 5th Planning Committee meeting, there are no scheduled planning meetings. For information related to planning, please visit www.hsca.ca/planning.
About
The Hillhurst Sunnyside Planning Committee (HSPC) is a standing committee of the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association (HSCA) that reports to the HSCA Board of Directors. The committee is made up of residents from Hillhurst and Sunnyside who have a keen interest in the way our communities redevelop. This is achieved by building positive relationships with various stakeholders, our ward councillor, and City of Calgary administration.
How the Planning Committee Works
The HSCA Planning Committee has no formal jurisdiction or authority in planning matters. We are unable to reject or approve development applications. The HSPC represents the interests of the community by carrying out its mandate from the HSCA and its Board of Directors under its Terms of Reference (TOR), which were ratified by the Board of Directors in November 2013 and revised in January 2018. You can access the TOR by clicking the button below.
The HSPC plays a valuable role for the HSCA by:
Providing advice, background information, community context, and feedback on development applications in Hillhurst and Sunnyside to the HSCA Board, the City of Calgary, residents, and applicants.
Expressing the aspirations of the Community Association to the City of Calgary and to applicants.
Advocating for development that fulfills the vision as described in the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Area Redevelopment Plan.
Community Planning Coordinator
Please note, the Planning Coordinator position is currently vacant. At this time, there are no scheduled Planning meetings.
Hillhurst-Sunnyside has experienced a lot of change over the last 15 years. To support the planning committee and community residents, the HSCA has an in-house urban planner who supports the HSPC by forming relationships with and acting as a liaison between community residents, developers, applicants, property owners, city administration, and the Ward 7 Councillor.
What the HSPC reviews
The HSPC will work to provide community members with information on developments as well as provide advice when navigating the City’s planning process. We encourage everyone to engage in the process, regardless of your views on a particular project. The HSPC will take community members views into consideration, however, it is not possible to champion everyone’s position.
Large Developments
As a volunteer-driven committee, the HSPC must choose when and where to commit their time. At this time, the HSPC will focus on large, multi-residential and commercial redevelopments throughout the community.
Smaller Applications: Infills/ Renovations/ Changes of Use
The HSPC infill subcommittee reviews the infill applications. We aim to deliver notices to neighbouring properties to advise them of the proposed development and how they can view the plans and provide feedback. Due to limited resources, we encourage neighbours to be proactive and visit the City’s Planning and Development Map to view the available plans.
Note: the communities do not have the option to comment on Contextual Dwelling applications. To find out why, read details here.
For all other applications like renovations, changes of use, and signs (to name a few), the HSPC is here to support you. We can provide direction, advice, and contact information for the affected neighbouring property. If you have any questions about any application or would like information on how you can appeal a decision, please email the Community Planning Coordinator.
