THE Unperishable Project

The Unperishable Project is a community-driven initiative to raise money for HSCA’s Fresh Choices grocery credit program.

A group of neighbourhood teens and parents have put together beautifully packaged meal kits filled with locally sourced ingredients, from recipes by local food legends Jule Van Rosendaal and Karen Anderson!

Karen is the Founder and CEO of Alberta Food Tours. She shared two recipes from the Taste Canada award-winning cookbook, A Spicy Touch - Family Favourites from Noorbanu Nimji’s Kitchen by Noorbanu Nimji and Karen Anderson.

Julie is the food and nutrition columnist on the Calgary Eyeopener, is a contributing food editor for the Globe and Mail, and has authored (or co-authored) 13 cookbooks.  She shares a recipe that she developed for Saskatchewan Pulse Growers.

To donate and scoop up a delicious meal, you can purchase on the website and pick up at the Famers' Market any Saturday, or purchase in-person on Saturday December 17th from 11am-3pm at our extra special holiday feast market!

HOW IT WORKS

You choose to make a donation to HSCA's Fresh Choices

You choose an Unperishable Project jar to take home for every $20 that you donate.

You choose whether to prepare the Unperishable Project meal yourself or gift it to someone else.

The money that you donate creates grocery credits for community members who need it, then they can choose the foods that fit their families.

Chai Masala

From A Spicy Touch: Stopping for "chai" when you travel in India is a wonderful break from the rigours of driving on the roads. You can order tea in a couple of ways. Black tea is just that. Chai is tea with milk. Chai masala is tea with milk and a spice blend. Every chai walla (tea stall worker) has their unique way to blend spices and the good ones produce such flavourful blends that they develop loyal patrons.

Ingredients you will need to make tea:

1 ½ mugs of water

½ mug of your favorite milk

2-4 teaspoons sweetener of your choice

1 tea bag from your Unperishable Project jar

Yield: 2 Servings

Chai Masala Mix

Here is the recipe to make your own tea bags.

Yield: 7 Tablespoons

Split Pea Dal with Coconut

Karen says: Most of the cooking time for this recipe is boiling time for the lentils so this is much easier than the time suggests.

Ingredients you will need to make this meal:

1 cup diced tomatoes

3 cups water

1 can (398 ml) of coconut milk

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Yield: 4 Servings

Secret Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Raisin Cookies

Julie says: In these crisp-edged, cakey cookies, lentils cleverly disguise themselves as oats - no one will ever guess they’re in there, bumping up protein and fibre.

Ingredients you will need to make a batch of cookies:

¼ cup butter

¼ canola oil

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

Yield: 1 ½ dozen cookies
