How we do it:

HSCA fundraises to provide grocery credits for residents of Hillhurst Sunnyside to shop at the Fresh Routes Mobile Grocery Store. This increases their ability to purchase healthy food by subsidizing their bill.

Community members are able to access grocery credits at an affordable place to shop right in their community which can save them time and provide a meaningful connection point into other programs and services we offer. A 2022 program survey showed that 92% of respondents prefer grocery credits when compared to free food or hampers. We estimate that 50% of Fresh Choices participants are also engaged with HSCA in some other way including volunteering and accessing free programs to help build connections to neighbours and community.

How you can help:

Program Continuation: Our target is to raise $5,000, which will be matched dollar for dollar by the Prosser Foundation. This will enable us to sustain the program to the end of the year and ensure that we can continue providing essential resources and support to those in need. So far, we have raised $3,800 and we are looking for the remaining $1,200.

Annual Program Expansion: Food insecurity in Calgary is growing at an alarming rate and that is being reflected in the number of households we serve each week. Our goal is to raise $50,000 annually which will allow us to provide Fresh Choices Grocery Credits to 100 households per week on an annual basis. With this funding, we cannot only maintain the program but also expand its reach if the need in Hillhurst Sunnyside continues to grow.
